Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany hospitalised after collapsing during training

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s second team train on Friday.

The 40-year-old had been unwell with a viral infection and missed Tuesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal. However, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender returned to the touchline on Wednesday for the match.

Bayern Munich confirmed the incident in a statement, saying Kompany had sought medical treatment after collapsing during a training session involving the club’s reserve team.

The German club added that Kompany would undergo further medical examinations and remain under medical supervision.

“For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations,” the statement said.

Bayern’s next fixture is against Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with Kompany’s assistants expected to oversee preparations and take charge of the team on matchday.

Sporting director Max Eberl expressed the club’s support for the manager, stressing that his health remained the top priority.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Eberl said.

He added that Kompany would receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as the time he needed to recover.

Eberl also expressed confidence in the coaching staff, saying they would take over Kompany’s responsibilities during his absence.

Aaron Danks, one of Kompany’s assistants, had previously handled Bayern’s pre-match press conference ahead of their Champions League encounter with Arsenal.

The club has not disclosed further details about the cause of Kompany’s collapse or how long he may remain away from his coaching duties.
